No More Excuses

Excuse: (n) An invalid reason or explanation put forward to defend or justify a fault or offense.

What excuses do you use regularly? How would you be different if you stopped making excuses?  This was the subject of the message by Pastor Chris Phillips last night at River of Life Church in Jacksonville, NC.

What Pastor Chris spoke about really resonated with me.  I realized I’m making excuses, both conciously and unconciously on a daily basis. It’s time to quit!

It’s too cold…

I’m too tired….

I forgot…

I was tempted…

I didn’t know…

It was his/her fault…

It’s time to take a stand against excuses.  The simple fact is, excuses are from the devil.  People make excuses all the time about the way they act.  Why they do what they do.  Why they are ending their marriage. Why they can’t give or serve more.  Why they are the way they are.

Think about this: Jesus had many opportunities to give an excuse but he didn’t.  Remember the story in the Bible when the devil tempted Jesus?  Jesus had been fasting for 40 days and the devil chose that time to attack.  He asked Jesus why he wouldn’t turn the rocks into bread if he was hungry.  Jesus didn’t give an excuse, he turned to the scripture and based his answer on that.  Sometimes we simply don’t feel like doing something but we must abandon what our heart feels in order to do what we know is right.

Why are we so quick to give excuses for the way we act?  Because it’s easy, that’s why.  It’s easier to say, “I give up” or “I couldn’t help myself”, when things get tough.  I challenge you, start recognizing when you’re giving yourself or others excuses and start eradicating them from your life.  You might never be the same.
